Long before he kissed me, I passed a whole lifetime with West, bathed in yellow light, baptized in lukewarm tap water, consecrated at sunrise when we broke a loaf open and looked. There, in the bakery, while the rest of the world was sleeping, time buckled and we found something outside it. This guy is tough and extremely hardworking (not to mention sexy … as in über sexy), but he is also tortured, and we learn more about the depth of his torment in book two, Harder (review follows this one). His life circumstances are the polar opposite of Caroline's, but he shares her drive to succeed. West Leavitt has a reputation as a "bad boy," but as Caroline soon learns there is more to him than meets the eye. Caroline is convinced that her hopes and dreams have been shattered. The resulting maelstrom of harassment and recrimination is not only humiliating, it's emotionally devastating.

It's that rush of relief and happiness that I feel when the characters work through that messy conflict making their HEA one to savor.
